Ireland announces the detention of some of its citizens after the interception of the aid fleet for Gaza

Ireland said today that several ships from the Sumud Global Flotilla heading to Gaza were stopped and that some Irish nationals were detained following an Israeli operation targeting the convoy, reports Anadolu.

Officials from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said they are closely monitoring the situation and cooperating with the relevant authorities.

“We are aware of the detention of several vessels and the detention of a number of citizens Irish. The department will provide consular assistance to affected Irish citizens,” the spokesman said.

The Global Flotilla Sumud, a humanitarian convoy aimed at breaking the Gaza blockade and delivering aid, departed from Barcelona on April 12 as part of its spring 2026 mission.

The fleet was later expanded with additional ships departing from Sicily on April 26. Flotilla officials said the convoy included 345 participants from 39 countries.

They said the operation took place late Wednesday in international waters near the Greek island of Crete, about 600 nautical miles from Gaza, where Israeli forces intervened against ships carrying activists.

According to organizers, Israeli forces seized 21 ships while 17 continued to enter Greek waters. and 14 more were still sailing towards them at the time of the last update. The status of the persons on board remains unclear.
