Israeli warplanes have struck oil storage depots and refinery facilities in the Iranian capital Tehran, while a major fire has been reported at an oil depot in the capital’s Aghdasieh district, Anadolu reports.

The strikes mark the first time Israel has targeted such facilities since launching a wider offensive against Iran last week along with the US.

According to the Israeli public broadcaster, the Israeli military said that last night it had launched a new wave of attacks targeting Iran’s infrastructure in the capital.

Israeli public broadcaster KAN reported that the Israeli Air Force targeted oil storage tanks and refinery facilities in Tehran.

Meanwhile, Iran’s semi-official Mehr News Agency reported that explosions were heard in Tehran after attacks.

In response to the targeting of the Tehran refinery, according to the Fars agency, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said that the Haifa refinery in Israel was hit by a missile.

Regional tensions have escalated since the US and Israel launched a large-scale attack against Iran on February 28, killing more than 1,000 people, including Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Ali. Khamenei, over 150 schoolgirls and senior military officials.

Iran has responded with a wide range of attacks, targeting US bases, diplomatic facilities and military personnel throughout the region, as well as several Israeli cities.
