After the shooting of a police officer in Göttingen, investigators are looking for a 16-year-old suspect. He allegedly shot the policeman during a clash between rival clans.

The incident happened on Saturday evening in the Weender Landstraße/Weender Tor area.

According to the police, two extended rival families, both known to the police, were fighting there. NDR reports that the family of the 16-year-old suspect is from Kosovo.

A European arrest warrant has been issued for the teenager on the charge of attempted murder, a spokesman for the public prosecutor’s office told n-tv/dpa and NDR. It is not clear whether the suspect is still in Germany or has already fled abroad.

The policeman was seriously injured and taken to the hospital. He remains in intensive care, but his life is no longer considered to be in danger.

The shooter fled the scene after the shooting. Police immediately launched a large-scale search, including the use of a police helicopter. The area around Weender Tor was cordoned off; according to police, there was no danger to the public.

The reasons for the altercation are still under investigation. The weapon used in the incident has not yet been found.
