The US-Israeli war against Iran has cost Americans more than $37.3 billion in additional energy prices, a study released Monday shows, Anadolu reports.
The Iran War Energy Cost Tracker from Brown University’s Watson School of International and Public Affairs estimates that Americans have paid about $37,346,893,483 in additional energy prices since February 28 when the US and Israel launched surprise attacks on Iran.
The data is being updated in real time with the number continuing to rise with each passing second. Most of the additional costs, $20.41 billion, were paid for diesel while oil accounted for nearly $17 billion.
The average American household paid $285.10 more per month for both gasoline and diesel.
“This is spending that comes directly out of the pockets of American consumers, and consumers can use the tracker to help plan for additional costs that may come with road trips or vacations. summer,” Brown University project leader Jeff Colgan said in a statement when the tool was launched in mid-April.
The war and Iran’s retaliatory decision to close the critical Strait of Hormuz have pushed up global energy prices sharply. Today, the cost of gasoline is $4,520 per gallon in the US, over 50 percent higher than when the war began with prices then below $3 per gallon.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the most important sea points in the world, connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. Its prolonged disruption has increased pressure on regional ports, shipping schedules and global supply chains already strained by security risks associated with the Iran war.
In addition to closing the strait, Iran retaliated against the US’s Gulf Arab allies by targeting critical energy infrastructure in those countries, further increasing the economic cost of the conflict.
