Turkey marks Day Against Islamophobia, remembers victims of 2019 Christchurch attack

Türkiye on Saturday marked the International Day Against Islamophobia, commemorating the victims of the 2019 Christchurch mosque attacks and calling for stronger global action against intolerance and discrimination against Muslims.

In a statement published on Turkish social media platform NSosyal, Turkey’s Foreign Ministry said it was commemorating the seventh anniversary of the March 15 terrorist attack. 2019 in Christchurch, New Zealand, honoring the victims.

51 people were killed and 40 others were injured at the Al Noor Mosque and the Linwood Islamic Center in what is considered the deadliest gun attack in New Zealand’s history.

The ministry recalled that 51 people, including a Turkish national, lost their lives in the attack on the two mosques in Christchurch, describing the incident as a heinous act of terrorism.

“On the seventh anniversary of the heinous terrorist attack that took place on March 15, 2019 in Christchurch, we respectfully remember the 51 people who lost their lives, including one of our citizens, and pray that God have mercy on them,” the statement said.

The ministry stressed that the international community must take a firm and united stand against intolerance, discrimination and violence aimed at Muslims around the world.

She added that the International Day Against Islamophobia, which is marked on March 15, also serves as a reminder of the shared responsibility to confront crimes that violate human dignity.

According to the statement, Turkey will continue to contribute to international cooperation in the fight against all forms of racism and discrimination.

The UN General Assembly approved with consensus in 2022 a resolution proclaiming March 15 as the International Day for the Fight Against Islamophobia.
