Three British activists associated with the Palestine Action group are in critical health after refusing food for more than two months, continuing their hunger strike in prison in protest.
Heba Muraisi and Kamran Ahmed have refused food for 67 and 60 days respectively, while a third, Lewie Chiaramello, is on partial strike due to diabetes. Their family members and friends told Al Jazeera that, despite the risk to their lives, they are determined to continue the protest until their demands are met.
According to relatives, Muraisi suffers from muscle spasms, breathing difficulties, severe pain and significant memory loss, while Ahmed has serious heart problems, dizziness and hearing loss. Both have been hospitalized several times in recent weeks.
The activists are in custody on charges related to attacks on Israeli defense company Elbit Systems’ facilities in Britain, charges they deny. Their demands include bail, the right to a fair trial and the lifting of the ban on the Palestine Action group, designated a terrorist organization by British authorities.
Doctors and human rights organizations have warned that the prolonged hunger strike could lead to irreversible health damage or death, while the British government has so far refused to intervene, saying it is following standard procedures for such cases in prisons. /message
