Dissolution bill passes first reading in Israeli parliament

Tuesday, June 2nd 2026

Israel’s parliament (Knesset) approved late Monday the first reading of a bill on self-dissolution, reports Anadolu.

According to Israel’s “Channel 12”, a full 106 out of 120 members voted in favor of the bill, with no votes against. The bill includes a possible election period between September 8 and October 20, Israeli news website Walla reported.

The ultra-Orthodox Shas party is pushing for elections on September 15, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party wants to push the date to the end of the term.

Legislative elections in Israel were originally scheduled for October 27, but the government’s failure to passed a law that exempts ultra-Orthodox Jews from military service has increased pressure for an early vote.

According to Israeli law, the bill must pass three readings to become law.

Walla said the bill will return to a Knesset committee after it passes first reading, in preparation for voting on second and third readings and setting a date for the elections.
