Ireland’s Foreign Minister expressed concern about the footage showing the inappropriate treatment of detained activists of the Global Sumud Flotilla by Israel and demanded their immediate release, reports Anadolu.
“I am horrified and shocked by the footage published by the Israeli Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben-Gvir, in which the illegally detained participants of the Global Sumud Flotilla, including citizens Irish people, are not treated in any way with dignity or due respect,” Helen McEntee said in a statement.
She stressed that the Irish Embassy in Israel has asked for immediate assurances that the welfare of all Irish citizens is ensured and that they enjoy all the protections to which they are entitled under international law.
“I have also asked for their immediate release,” McEntee said, adding that she can assure the families and their relatives that Irish citizens will receive all the necessary consular assistance and support once they are granted access.
The chief diplomat’s statement came after Ben-Gvir released a video with the caption “Welcome to Israel” showing activists detained, abducted by Israeli forces in international waters, tied up and forced to kneel.
The Sumud Global Humanitarian Flotilla said on Tuesday that all 50 ships of its aid convoy were seized by Israel. Together, they were carrying 428 people from 44 countries, having set out from Marmaris, Turkey, in a new attempt to break the illegal Israeli blockade imposed on Gaza since 2007.
