Spain summoned Israel’s charge d’affaires for consultation, after Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares condemned what he called “monstrous”, “inhuman” and “shameful” treatment of activists on board the humanitarian flotilla bound for Gaza, reports Anadolu.

In a video message published on the American social platform X, Albares said: “I saw a terrible, inhumane and shameful video, in which the members of the flotilla are treated unfairly and humiliatingly by an Israeli minister and the police”.

Among them, he pointed out that there were Spanish citizens in the flotilla, calling the incident “deeply alarming”.

“I repeat, this treatment is monstrous, it is shameful, it is inhumane”, Albares added, demanding “a public apology from Israel”.

The Spanish minister said that Madrid has urgently called Israel’s charge d’affaires to convey Spain’s “total rejection,” “severe condemnation” and “deep disgust” at what he called “unacceptable and disgusting treatment.”

He also said that Spain demands the immediate release of the participants in the flotilla and will contact other countries whose citizens are involved to coordinate possible measures.

Albares noted that the Israeli minister of National Security Itamar Ben-Gvir, who appears in the footage, has already been sanctioned by Spain and banned from entering the country.

“And soon the same thing will happen throughout the European Union,” he said.

The statements came after a video released by Ben-Gvir showed activists detained, tied up and forced to kneel after being detained by Israeli forces in international waters.

Humanitarian flotilla Global Sumud said on Tuesday that all 50 ships in its convoy were seized by Israel.
