Sweden becomes a “smoke-free” country, the smoking rate falls below 5 percent

Monday, May 25th 2026

Sweden has achieved its goal of having less than 5 percent of the population smoke regularly, effectively becoming a “smoke-free” country, Radio Sweden reported today, Anadolu broadcasts.

The Swedish Information Council on Alcohol and Other Drugs has confirmed this achievement, stating that the country has now met its long-term public health goal for 2025.

In the early 1980s, more than 30 percent of Swedes smoked on a daily basis, the council pointed out.

This decrease represents a steady decline over several decades, while public health policies and changing social habits have contributed to declining smoking rates across the country.
