Argentina officially withdraws from the World Health Organization

Thursday, March 19th 2026

Argentina has officially withdrawn from the World Health Organization, one year after officially announcing its decision, as confirmed by Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno in X.

“Today Argentina’s withdrawal from the World Health Organization (WHO) comes into force, one year after the official announcement made by our country”, said Quirno, recalling that the announcement was made on March 17, 2025 to the secretary general of UN.

“In accordance with the provisions of the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties, the withdrawal takes place one year later”, he added.

Despite the withdrawal, the government assured that “it will continue to promote international cooperation in health through bilateral agreements and at the regional levels, fully protecting its sovereignty and its ability to decide on health policies”.

The decision was justified at the time by the president Javier Milei and his team as a response to “deep differences” with the WHO during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The president called the agency “evil and the enforcement arm of what was the biggest experiment in social control in history”.
