France will not host US military aircraft at its bases in the Middle East, the French military command said Thursday, denying earlier media reports, Anadolu reports.
“The information about the so-called American assets being deployed at our bases in the Middle East is incorrect,” said a spokesman for the Chief of Defense Staff.
However, US military aircraft that will be used to operational support, and not combat aircraft, have been temporarily authorized to be stationed at the Istres Air Base in southeastern France, the military informed Franceinfo.
According to the French Armed Forces, the presence of the aircraft is part of a “routine procedure within NATO”, the transatlantic military alliance that includes several European and North American countries.
Given the tensions surrounding the ongoing US military operations against To Iran, France demanded that the planes “not participate in any way” in the operations carried out by Washington against the country.
Instead, the means should be used “strictly to support the defense of our partners in the region”, the spokesman said, adding that Paris had received “full guarantees” that this condition would be respected.
The clarification came after earlier reports claimed that US planes could be based at French bases in the East. Medium, information that was widely circulated by several media outlets before being denied by the French military.
