The European Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, has reacted to the statement of the Minister of Public Administration and Local Self-Government of Serbia, Snezhana Paunović, who said that she would carry out “ethnic cleansing” in Kosovo if she had the power that Slobodan Milosevic had during the war.
At a press conference in Brussels, after the closing of two chapters of membership negotiations with Montenegro, Kos was asked if the European Commission continues to stand behind the positive assessment of Serbia in terms of its commitment to the process of normalizing relations with Kosovo.
The European Commissioner stated that such statements are unacceptable and contradict the values on which the European Union was built.
“There can only be zero tolerance for such statements as we have heard. And there is no place in Europe for rhetoric that justifies, advocates or glorifies ethnic cleansing. I am personally shocked that this must be said in this situation. Such statements are in direct opposition to human values and dignity, the necessary reconciliation, accountability and good neighborly relations on which the EU is built, without which the membership process cannot happen,” Kos said.
