In early March, an Israeli transport plane left Tel Aviv for Belgrade and then returned to the Jewish state, according to Radio Free Europe data and flight tracking sites. The plane was of the type used for heavy and dangerous cargo, including weapons, although it is not clear what exactly it was carrying, as the relevant institutions have not provided clarification. The private Israeli company “Challenge Airlines IL” has operated during the last month at least nine flights between Serbia and Israel, including two flights after the escalation of the Israeli-Iranian conflict on February 28, 2026.
Radio Free Europe’s questions to the Serbian ministries and the company remained unanswered. Serbia had suspended arms exports in June 2025 following an order by President Aleksandar Vučić, but information from two state-owned factories indicated that exports resumed in February 2026.
Official data on arms exports is scarce and secrets about the destination, quantity and types of weapons remain unknown. In 2025, Serbia exported about $50 million worth of arms and ammunition, half the level in 2024. Belgrade Airport has not provided details on aircraft cargoes linked to Israel, insisting only that the use of the infrastructure is in accordance with international and national regulations. REL says that even during the moratorium on the export of weapons from Serbia, there is evidence that some shipments have continued, including to Azerbaijan and Cyprus.
Legally, permits for the export of weapons require approval from several ministries and a certificate from the end user, with the aim of avoiding the violation of international sanctions and preventing armed conflicts. However, most ammunition exports are not publicly reported, making them difficult to track.
