A new study involving more than 9,000 older adults suggests that an optimistic attitude toward life may help protect cognitive function and lower the risk of dementia.
Researchers found that individuals with higher levels of optimism performed better on cognitive tests and showed lower signs of decline in mental abilities over time.
The findings add to growing evidence that psychological state and ways of thinking not only affect mental health, but can also have significant effects on physical health and the brain’s aging processes.
According to the study authors, optimism may be associated with healthier lifestyle behaviors, lower stress levels, and a greater resistance to factors that contribute to cognitive impairment.
The results lend scientific support to the well-known popular culture message of the song Always Look on the Bright Side of Life. from Monty Python, which promotes a positive attitude even in difficult circumstances.
Researchers note, however, that while the link is strong, optimism is not a single protective factor and that brain health is influenced by a combination of genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors.
