The cold weather plan has been activated in Geneva since yesterday. Faced with the significant drop in temperatures and the return of the wind from the north, the City of Geneva has decided to extend this plan, which was activated on Sunday, until January 12. The measures include the opening of additional spaces for emergency accommodation and the doubling of night patrols in the field.
With temperatures dropping to -6 degrees Celsius, the cold is felt strongly on the streets of Geneva.
In these temperatures there is a risk of hypothermia: the human body is not designed to stay outside for several hours,” explains Sami Ben Salah, a social worker of the City of Geneva, on Monday during the 12:45 news edition.
On the streets of the city, Sami Ben Salah and one of his colleagues offer homeless people they meet a warm place to spend the night.
They also encourage them to call a hotline dedicated to emergencies, since 80 additional places for shelter have been opened since December 29.
“People are happy to be able to shelter, especially when the temperatures become really extreme,” emphasizes Claudio Gramenzi, commander of the city’s Civil Protection.
