The Foreign Minister of Spain, Jose Manuel Albares, strongly criticized the policies of the Israeli government and said that the recognition of the Palestinian state is necessary to preserve the two-state solution, reports Anadolu.

“I do not believe that there will be security, peace and stability in the Middle East if we do not implement the two-state solution”, Albares said during a panel discussion at the “Jacques Delors” Center at the Hertie School in Berlin.

He criticized the policies of Benjamin Netanyahu’s government in Gaza and the West Bank, pointing to increased violence by Israeli extremists, and said that Spain’s decision to recognize Palestine, followed later by several European countries, was necessary.

“When you see the situation in Gaza, what is the second phase of the peace plan? Nobody knows. Illegal settlements in the West Bank are expanding more and more. Settler violence is out of control,” he said. he.

“Ultimately, the recognition of the state of Palestine is the best, almost the only tool we have to protect the two-state solution. We are only two steps away from that becoming almost impossible,” Albares warned.

He stressed that reviving diplomatic efforts and resuming negotiations for a two-state solution remain the only way to guarantee security and a peaceful future for both the Palestinians and Israelis.

Spain recognized the state of Palestine in 2024. In 2025, several other European countries, including France, the United Kingdom and Belgium, followed suit.

However, Germany has remained increasingly isolated in Europe on the issue, with Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s government insisting that recognition should only come at the end of a peace process.
