The UN Special Rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, Francesca Albanese, called on Italy to support the suspension of the EU-Israel Association Agreement, saying that punishment alone is not enough after the treatment of activists of the humanitarian flotilla bound for Gaza, reports Anadolu.
Albanese responded to the statements of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who condemned the Israeli Minister of National Security and key coalition partner Itamar Ben-Gvir for the footage he shared about the flotilla activists.
“President Meloni, it is good to condemn Ben Gvir for humiliating the members of the flotilla, but words are not enough: Italy must stop opposing the suspension of the EU-Israel Agreement,” Albanese wrote on the American social platform X.
Albanese described the treatment of the flotilla members as “treatment luxurious compared to what is done to Palestinians in Israeli prisons”.
Her statements came after Meloni wrote in X that the footage involving Ben Gvir and flotilla activists was “unacceptable”.
“It is unacceptable that these demonstrators, including many Italian citizens, are treated in this way that violates human dignity,” Meloni wrote.
The prime minister said Rome was taking ” all necessary measures” to ensure the immediate release of Italian citizens and demanded “an apology for the treatment of these demonstrators”.
Meloni also announced that the Foreign Ministry will summon the Israeli ambassador to seek “formal clarifications” on the incident.
The statements came after a video released by Ben-Gvir showed activists detained, tied up and forced to kneel after being detained by Israeli forces in waters. international.
The Sumud Global Flotilla said on Tuesday that all 50 ships in its convoy were seized by Israel.
