The US Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, has stated that any additional mine placement by Iran in the Strait of Hormuz will be considered a violation of the ceasefire in force with the US, reports Anadolu.
He said that the passage through this strategic sea route “is developing much more limited than everyone would like” and with more risk due to, according to him, Iranian efforts to place mines.
“If there is an attempt to lay mines recklessly and irresponsibly, we will respond. This is a violation of the ceasefire,” he told reporters at the Pentagon.
Hegseth stressed that President Donald Trump has authorized the military to destroy ships that pose a threat.
“Our commanders have clear rules of engagement. If Iran places mines in the water or threatens American merchant ships, we will destroy them without hesitation,” he added. him.
The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Dan Caine, said that Iran has attacked five ships in the Strait of Hormuz and seized two of them.
According to him, an additional aircraft carrier will soon join the US naval blockade against ships entering or leaving Iranian ports.
He also said that “the blockade is expanding and becoming global.” adding that “no one sails from Hormuz to the world without the permission of the US Navy”.
On the other hand, Iran has declared that the US blockade is a violation of the ceasefire and has demanded its termination as a condition for the resumption of negotiations, which currently remain blocked.
