Hungary ends the state of emergency imposed during the pandemic and the war in Ukraine

Hungary’s state of emergency government framework, first imposed during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic and later extended with wartime provisions after the war in Ukraine, has officially ended today after years of government by decree, reports Anadolu.

“Starting today, after four years, the wartime state of emergency in Hungary is ending,” Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar said on the American social network. X.

“We are returning to normality,” he added, noting that the measure also ends the rule by decree imposed during the tenure of former prime minister Viktor Orban.

The broader special legal framework allowed the government to run the country by decree for several years, according to local media, with more than 170 emergency decrees issued in connection with the war in neighboring Ukraine.

The system was first introduced last year. 2020 during the coronavirus pandemic and later extended to 2022 after Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Former Prime Minister Orban declared a wartime state of emergency in May 2022, shortly after forming his fifth government, citing security and humanitarian risks from the conflict.

Magyar’s Tisza party defeated Orban in parliamentary elections. on April 12, ending his 16-year rule and bringing a political transition to the country.
