The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, took the floor in the Assembly of Kosovo in the extraordinary session called by the Vetëvendosje Movement, where the election of the president is being discussed.

Kurti said that Vetëvendosje has invited the Democratic Party of Kosovo and the Democratic League of Kosovo to jointly propose three consensual names for the president of the country.

“We invited the PDK and the LDK to jointly propose three names and these three names should be unifying, consensual, with merit, values and contribution, and be outside the current political scene, outside of these controversies that unfortunately mostly characterize the political environment in Kosovo”, stated Kurti.

He added that there are many academic and professional figures in Kosovo who would honor the institution of the president.

“I believe that in the Republic of Kosovo there are many professors and figures who would honor country by becoming presidents of the Republic”, he said.

According to Kurti, VV has asked LDK and PDK to each propose one name, while a third be shared, also offering guarantees for voting and signatures.

He said that, if this offer were accepted, current candidates would withdraw from the race, mentioning that some figures have expressed their willingness not to run under such conditions.

Kurti emphasized that in this way the future president would be the result of an agreement between the opposition and the majority, but according to him, the offer was rejected.

“Today the opposition was able to have its own president, but this offer was rejected”, said Kurti.

Kurti said that they “were not interested”.

On Saturday morning, the LVV asked the PDK and the LDK for three names for President, but without mentioning their support possible in the Assembly.

In that proposal, LVV mentioned only the signatures to bring the candidates to the Assembly.

“These three candidates must be unifying figures, with high civic and national integrity, with proven contribution in professional and social life, and outside the current political scene. At least 90 signatures of the deputies of the Assembly of the Republic of Kosovo would be secured for these three. In that case, in advance “Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora Glauk Konjufca and MP Dr. Fatmire Mulhaxha-Kollçaku withdrew from the candidacy”, it was said in the LVV’s proposal on Saturday.
