Somalia’s Ministry of Defense has announced that the national army, supported by regional security forces, has carried out an extensive operation in the south of the country, killing 27 militants of the Al Shabaab group, including important members.
According to the official statement, the operations have been carried out in the areas of Jilib, Hagar and Afmadow districts, in the Middle and Lower Juba regions, where government forces have advanced on the ground, hitting the positions of militants.
During the operation, airstrikes supported by international partners were carried out in parallel, increasing the pressure on Al Shabaab fighters who were hiding in these areas.
The authorities announced that during the operation weapons, military equipment and land mines were seized, which the group intended to use against civilians.
The Somali army has emphasized that the operations will continue to pursue the remaining elements. of Al Shabaab, in order to guarantee security and stability in the country.
The Al Shabaab group has waged an armed insurgency against the Somali government for more than 16 years, often attacking security forces, officials and civilians.
