The Speaker of the Turkish Parliament, Numan Kurtulmuş, has called for the suspension of Israel from the United Nations, criticizing the bill on the death penalty against Palestinian prisoners and referring to international actions against South Africa during apartheid as a precedent.

During the occasion speech at the 152nd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Istanbul, Kurtulmuş said that the international system has previously acted against apartheid, recalling the suspension of South Africa’s UN membership in 1974.

He argued that Israel is implementing similar practices, asking: “Isn’t it apartheid to apply one law to Palestinians and another to Israelis in one country?”

Kurtulmuş also criticized the UN, saying it has failed to stop recent conflicts and has become ineffective in preventing violence, especially in Gaza.

“Unfortunately, the United Nations has become an international institution directed in accordance with the wishes of those in power,” he said.

Noting that many Middle Eastern states have faced violations of their sovereignty, Kurtulmuşi underlined that all states have equal sovereign rights.

On the sidelines of the meeting, he met with the chairman of the Consultative Assembly of Oman, Khalid al-Maawali, whom he thanked for Oman’s mediation efforts, while calling for the resumption of talks in Pakistan to turn the ceasefire into a lasting agreement.

After pointing out that Turkey is hosting the IPU Assembly for the fourth time, with some 155 countries represented in Istanbul, Speaker Kurtulmuş warned that Israel’s actions risk incite hostilities between the Gulf states and Iran.
