Confirmation: We should spend the billions on food and medicine, not to kill each other!

In an interview with the Italian newspaper La Repubblica, US Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont calls for politics to return to the reality of the working class, where 60 percent of Americans today struggle for survival.

The icon of the American left analyzes the dangers of autocrats like Trump and the unlimited power of technological oligarchs, seeking a global union against inequality.

Through his new book “Against oligarchy”, Sanders proposes a path of hope for the new generations and a new model of civic engagement.

One percent of the population that owns more than the remaining 93 percent. A handful of billionaires who today enjoy unprecedented power. People like Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg and a few others, who influence the economy and politics, deepening inequalities and pushing the country towards authoritarianism. Trump is one of them and is supported by them.

In the book you make a long list of Trump’s broken promises. But one thing is missing: the one to stop starting wars…

He is a very dangerous president. Together with Netanyahu, he started an unconstitutional, illegal and destructive war, just like Putin in Ukraine. This is forcing us to live in a kind of anarchy where international law no longer applies. We should spend those billions of dollars on food and medicine, instead of using them to kill each other.

Trump is in China. What do you expect from the talks with Xi?

For Beijing to use its influence to end this war. And for both of them to face an issue that is very close to my heart: Artificial Intelligence. International rules are needed to prevent millions of jobs from disappearing from it. Also to prevent its development from spiraling out of human control, putting all of humanity at risk.

You, as a Jew, were the first senator to use the term “genocide” against the Palestinians…

Israel has long been a liberal society in the traditional sense. Netanyahu and his racist right-wing government turned it into something else.

Israel had a right to defend itself. But what it did do was launch an all-out war against the men, women and children of Gaza, in violation of international law. Today, more and more Americans are asking the government to stop spending money on killing Palestinians. And I am fully engaged in this direction.

You write that Trump’s many lies have “undermined the American democratic and political process”. Is it still possible for him to recover?

Trump is a demagogue. Instead of confronting the crises that are bringing America to its knees, it seeks to maintain power by inciting hatred against immigrants and foreigners. And also against China, Iran, Mexico and Canada. We as leftists should do the opposite: unite people around projects of solidarity.

Who will run from the Democrats for the White House?

It is too early to talk. I hope it is someone who has the courage to challenge the big economic interests, becoming the voice of the people’s anger, the anger that is now fueling support for the Trump right.

It has to be someone capable of accepting reality and motivating the masses. Volunteers have to go door to door, convincing people through direct conversations rather than billions of dollars in advertising. This is how we succeeded in New York, we succeeded with Zorhan Mamdani.

Many people fear that in November there will be no free elections…

Trump is trying to undermine democracy through what we in the US call gerrymandering. He manipulates electoral district boundaries to make it harder for the poor, the disabled, and people of color to vote against him. But the elections will be held and, if we are smart, we can gain control of the Congress and maybe even the Senate.

The book is dedicated to your grandchildren and all the young people of the world…

We must be able to leave them a fair democracy. And this can only be achieved by working together.

I know that people say “it’s useless to vote, nothing changes”. A clear example is precisely Trump. Although he is far down in the polls, he is more popular than many Democrats in Congress. But we on the left are working on it, trying to form a new political class.

We support women, people of color and young people who are ready to run. Including them in the political system means better representing America, working for change. Therefore, I say to those who are pessimistic: roll up your sleeves, there is no transformation without commitment. /square
