The acting president, Albulena Haxhiu, has set June 7 as the date for holding new parliamentary elections in Kosovo.

Haxhiu announced that this decision comes after the failure of the Assembly to elect the president, which according to her automatically leads the country to early elections within the constitutional deadlines.

“As you know, after the failure of the Assembly to elect the president, the Assembly is considered dissolved and the elections must to be held within the deadline of 45 days. Yesterday I met with Chairman Kreshnik, with whom we discussed the elections. I heard the proposals of the parties for the date of the elections. After assessing the organizational needs of the CEC, I decided that the early elections will be held on June 7.

that the current situation is not what the citizens expected.

“This is not what the citizens wanted, as they expect unity, stable institutions and not the opposite”, she said.

Haxhiu emphasized that the country has no time to waste and that the responsibility falls on all political actors.

“We have a lot of work ahead of us and we do not have the comfort of wasting time. In a democracy, when the institutional road is blocked, the word goes back to the citizens. The responsibility is everyone’s”.

In the end, she assessed Kosovo’s capacity for organizing elections.

“Kosovo has proven that it knows how to organize free, democratic and reliable electoral processes”, concluded Haxhiu.
