Disproportional war where the inferior seems to prevail over the superior
The Israeli newspaper Maariv has revealed that Israel’s advanced military capabilities, including the Arrow missile defense system and F-35 Lightning II aircraft, have not prevented the operational challenges posed by the drones used by Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.
According to Maariv, Israel’s Directorate of Military Intelligence (AMAN) and the Directorate of The Defense Research and Development Authority (MAFAT) has not found a suitable solution to what it describes as the “micro-tactical” threat posed by small, inexpensive drones.
Maariv finds that these Hezbollah drones have been effective in causing casualties among Israeli forces and disrupting operations on the ground. She noted that such threats are not new, with two main categories identified in military use: drones controlled via wireless communications and those controlled via fiber-optic links.
While wireless drones can be countered using electronic warfare systems that jam the signals, the report asserts that fiber-optic drones present a more complex challenge, as they are not vulnerable to the same jamming methods.
The report also adds that these technologies have been available for years and argues that the Israeli military should have developed countermeasures much earlier, especially given the availability of commercial drone platforms that can be adapted for combat purposes.
The tactical advantages of such drones have been highlighted, including low-altitude flight, minimal noise and reduced detection by conventional radar systems, which together complicate efforts to intercept them. /tesheshi.com/
