Israel said on Monday that it has given the Palestinian group Hamas a 60-day ultimatum to disarm, threatening a full return to war if it does not obey the decision.
Hamas “must hand over all its weaponry,” including rifles, Israeli Cabinet Secretary Yossi Fuchs said during a conference in Jerusalem, quoted by The Times of Israel.
Fusch claimed that this period has been sought from the United States administration, and that they are respecting that.
Without confirming when exactly the ultimatum will start, Fuchs said it could start with the February 19 meeting of US President Donald Trump’s Peace Council.
“We will evaluate it,” Fuchs said. “If it works, great. If not, then the IDF (army) will have to complete the mission.”
There was no immediate comment from Hamas or Washington on the Israeli claim.
Since a ceasefire agreement took effect on October 10, Israeli forces have carried out hundreds of violations through shelling and gunfire, killing 603 Palestinians and injuring 1,618 others, according to the Health Ministry. Gaza.
Hamas has rejected calls to hand over its weapons, proposing instead that they be “stored or frozen”.
The group says it is a resistance movement against Israel, which the UN considers the occupying power in the Palestinian territories.
