Editorial: Were the governing partner and the opposition in Prizren “deceived” in the case of Arben Shala in the commission for directors?

The Municipal Assembly of Prizren, in the meeting held two weeks ago, approved the formation of the selection committee of the DKA (for principals and vice-principals of schools). In the composition presented then, the name of the representative of civil society, Arben Shala, did not appear again, which was seen as a withdrawal from his involvement in sensitive education processes.

The LDK, as part of the governing coalition with the PDK, had also voted for this composition, while the opposition from Vetëvendosje gave congratulatory statements for not including the “trickster” as they call Shala in the commission, writes Gazeta e Prizren.”

However, recent developments have opened up new dilemmas. Two days ago, Gazeta e Prizren reported that Shala was included in the commission that is evaluating the performance of the current school principals, who have applied for the extension of their mandate. This commission was appointed by the DKA and consists of two other members, which has also been officially confirmed.

Was this a calculation of power in Prizren?

The name of Arben Shalë had been the subject of controversy three years ago, after the publication of an audio recording in the media, which was related to the selection process of school principals in Prizren. The then opposition, LDK and Vetëvendosje, had also raised doubts about the financial means in the form of subsidies that Shala had received from the Municipality through an NGO, which, according to the claims of the time, could have been used to influence educational processes and other benefits from subsidies for services to the government from Shala.

Ironically, the very opposition that had once criticized Shala and that had welcomed his non-inclusion in the new commission, seems to have been unaware of his return to another important process within education.

During the session when the DKA selection committee was approved, the head of the group of Vetëvendosje councilors, Dafina Alishani stated that he appreciated the fact that this time “the trickster Shala” was not involved.

Was this a calculated political move or another “trick”, as Shala has often been called? The question arises: were the governing partner, the LDK, as well as the opposition in Prizren, “deceived” in this process? Prizren
