Paris Saint-Germain made history by securing five consecutive titles in French football’s elite for the first time, after a 2-0 triumph over RC Lens at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis.
The head-to-head victory against their nearest rival confirmed the Parisians’ next Ligue 1 trophy.
The match started amid off-field tensions, as Lens had earlier objected to the match being postponed, claiming that this had given PSG more time to prepare against Liverpool FC in the Champions League.
The home team entered the match better and created some good scoring chances. Matvey Safonov was decisive for the visitors, making some important saves against Lens’ attempts.
However, PSG struck at the ideal moment. Ousmane Dembélé won the ball in midfield and assisted Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who scored correctly for a 1-0 lead.
Lens continued to look for an equalizer in the second half, but failed to beat Safonov. When the locals were dominating, PSG showed the efficiency of the champion. In extra minutes, Ibrahim Mbaye sealed the triumph with the second goal, securing the club’s 14th championship title in France.
Although the game was not among the most spectacular for the team led by Luis Enrique, PSG achieved the main objective and now aims to end the season with another “double” – Ligue 1 and the UEFA Champions League.
