Hamas must be disarmed, but not disappear as a political force. This is what Nikolay Mladenov, senior representative of the Peace Council for Gaza, a structure created by US President Donald Trump, said in Jerusalem.

“We do not demand that Hamas disappear as a political entity. But it is non-negotiable that armed groups or militias with special military structures, weapon arsenals and tunnel networks cannot exist in parallel with a transitional Palestinian authority”, declared the Bulgarian diplomat.

Mladenov also emphasized that the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip will require many years.

According to him, the damage is extensive and the reconstruction process could take “a whole generation”, due to the millions of tons of waste, the destruction of infrastructure and the need for housing, water and sanitation for more than a million inhabitants.
