Former French footballer and actor Eric Cantona supported a soccer jersey campaign in support of imprisoned Palestinian leader Marwan Barghouti, reports Anadolu.
Cantona posted a photo on Instagram of himself wearing a shirt inspired by the 2002 Palestinian national team shirt, with the slogan “Free Marwan.”
The accompanying statement said Israel imprisoned Barghouti in 2002 while he was serving as an MP, adding that he was convicted by a court he did not recognize, after what international legal experts described as a flawed and illegal trial.
“Like Nelson Mandela, his struggle for freedom has become a symbol of the struggle of an entire nation,” the statement said, describing Barghouti as “a passionate soccer fan who believes in the power of sports to unite the people”.
The post added that Barghouti will miss another FIFA World Cup with his children this year, marking the seventh tournament since his imprisonment.
“In his honour, we have designed a new ‘Free Marwan’ football shirt, inspired by the Palestinian national team’s shirt from 2002, the same year he was captured,” it said. statement.
“More than a shirt, it is a reminder of what football really stands for: unity, justice, freedom, integrity, endurance and the refusal to give up,” said Cantona.
