The European Commission has introduced a new initiative called the Global Health Resilience Initiative, with the aim of strengthening international preparedness for future pandemics and diversifying global supply chains for critical health products, reports Anadolu.
The Commission said the initiative aims to strengthen the European Union’s (EU) prevention, preparedness and response mechanisms to future health threats, while reducing vulnerabilities in global systems. A central pillar of the strategy focuses on improving international preparedness for epidemics and cross-border health crises.
The EU said it will strengthen global detection and response networks, increase crisis management capacities and ensure wider access to medical measures, including vaccines, therapies and diagnostics.
The European bloc also plans to create a global health monitoring system and sustainability, which will map health spending worldwide and identify preparedness gaps.
Another component aims to diversify supply chains and manufacturing capacity for essential health products, taking into account lessons from disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The EU also aims to expand manufacturing capacity through partnerships with governments and the private sector in partner countries, as well as strengthen trust in science and combat disinformation health.
“The latest hantavirus outbreak reminds us why we need more international cooperation, not less,” said EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas.
