Americans don’t want Trump’s war with Canada, ‘no’ tariffs and lake name

US President Donald Trump is facing widespread public opposition to the new trade war with Canada and the decision to change the name of Lake Ontario to “America’s Lake”.

As the United States approaches the 2026 midterm elections, a Reuters/Ipsos poll shows that 63% of of Americans are against changing the name of Lake Ontario, a move supported by only 14% of those interviewed.

Republicans are also against the decision, with 43% opposing it and 33% supporting it. Opposition is even greater when it comes to new US tariffs on Canadian goods. 57% of Americans disapprove while only 20% support them. The poll also shows that 46% of Americans hold the United States more responsible for escalating the trade conflict, compared to just 12% who blame Canada.

In another indication of dissatisfaction, 68% of Americans say they prefer Washington not to take a tough line in negotiations with Canada, even if it means the United States doesn’t get everything it wants.

According to the analysis, the results show that there is little public support for a clash with Canada. Even within the Republican Party, support for Trump’s tough approach remains limited.
