Blurred vision in one or both eyes in the morning is something that happens to many people. In most cases it is not a concern and the vision clears up after a few blinks or rubbing the eyes.

Why you may have blurry vision in the morning

Tears keep the eye moist and protected. During the night, tears can dry on the surface of the eye and in the morning create foggy or blurred vision. It usually goes away quickly after a few blinks.

Allergies can cause itchy, red, watery, and dry eyes, leading to blurred vision in the morning. They are often associated with dust, spiders or animal hair in the room, or sheet detergents.

Sleeping on your face can cause a condition where the upper eyelid loses its elasticity, leading to blurred vision in the morning, watering and burning eyes. It is more common in overweight people, but it can happen to anyone.

It is an inherited condition that causes the cornea to swell during sleep, causing morning vision to be blurry. It usually gets better during the day. Most common in women over the age of 50.

Antihistamines, sleep medications, cold medications, and some stress medications can decrease tear production, causing dry eyes and blurred vision in the morning.

Sleeping with lenses decreases the oxygen supply to the eyes and can cause dryness and blurred vision. Lenses should always be removed before bed.

Glucose that is too high or too low can cause blurred vision in the morning. It is often accompanied by other symptoms such as fatigue, dizziness and weakness. In some cases it can be a sign of diabetes.

The small glands around the eye can produce excess oil at night, causing irritation and blurred vision in the morning.

Sleeping with a fan directed at the face

Continuous air can dry out the eyes and skin even while sleeping, causing itching, irritation and blurred vision.

When to see a doctor
There is no need to worry if the blurriness disappears quickly after waking up or happens occasionally.

In rare cases, blurred vision can be related to serious problems such as a stroke, so if symptoms such as difficulty speaking, weakness on one side of the body, dizziness or severe headache appear, seek emergency medical attention.
