People taking a widely used supplement should reduce the dose if they notice four specific symptoms, as taking too much can be dangerous.
Vitamins and minerals play an important role in the proper functioning of the body. Most nutritional needs should be obtained from a healthy, balanced diet, but some people choose to use supplements.
Iron is one such supplement – a mineral needed for the production of hemoglobin, which carries oxygen in the blood. Iron deficiency can cause iron deficiency anemia, with symptoms such as fatigue, low energy, shortness of breath, and a fast heart rate. To prevent this, some may take iron supplements.
However, the National Health Service (UK) warns on its website that taking “very large amounts” of iron can cause:
If these symptoms occur, it may be time to reduce your iron dose. In children, too much iron can be fatal. The NHS says:
“Very high doses of iron can be fatal, especially in children, so always keep it out of their reach.”
A high dose of iron for adults is considered above 20mg.
Men aged 19 and over: 8.7mg a day
Postmenopausal women who are still menstruating may need the same amount as women 19–49 years old.
