A well-known medical university in China has launched an investigation after the death of a young girl during an experimental trial with genetic modification at a Shanghai hospital.

According to the reports of the magazine Science, the girl’s parents had paid about 748 thousand euros for the development of the treatment, in the hope that the therapy would correct a genetic defect that caused problems in her development.

After the treatment, the girl suffered a high fever and kidney damage, before that he died in intensive care.

The hospital’s ethics board had assessed that the death was related to the therapy, but the case was not made public, writes CNN, Sinjali reports.

The trial was developed by researchers at Jiaotong University in Shanghai and was aimed at using genetic modification technology to treat a rare disease.

The case has raised concerns about the safety and oversight of new biomedical trials in China, while the authorities have launched a full investigation.
