Germany and Italy have called on Israel to respect international law and refrain from “irresponsible actions” after the intervention of Israeli forces against a humanitarian flotilla that was headed towards Gaza in international waters, reports Anadolu.

“Italy and Germany follow with great concern the developments regarding the Sumud Global Flotilla, which was seized last night in international waters off the coast of Greece,” a joint statement says. of Berlin and Rome.

“We call for full respect for international law in force and for restraint from irresponsible actions. Our highest joint priority is to guarantee the safety of our citizens, in accordance with international humanitarian law,” it further emphasized.

The German and Italian governments also reiterated their support for the efforts of the international community to provide humanitarian aid to Gaza, in accordance with law and standards international.

Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that naval forces have stopped and seized more than 20 ships of the Global Sumud Flotilla in international waters in the Mediterranean Sea and detained about 175 activists on board. The attack occurred near the Greek island of Crete, hundreds of nautical miles (over 1,000 kilometers) from Israel.

The flotilla, carrying humanitarian aid, set out two weeks ago from the Italian island of Sicily, with a total of 58 ships aimed at breaking Israel’s years-long blockade of Gaza.

Israel has imposed a strict blockade on the Gaza Strip since 2007, leaving the population of 2.4 million on the brink of starvation.

In October 2023, the Israeli army launched an offensive in Gaza, killing more than 72,000 people, injuring over 172,000 and causing massive destruction in the besieged Palestinian territory.
