Drinking up to 400 milligrams of caffeine per day, which for most people corresponds to about 3 to 5 cups of coffee, is considered safe for most adults. In some cases, even moderate coffee consumption appears to be associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease. This is the conclusion of a new scientific statement from the American Heart Association, published in the prestigious journal "Circulation", where reviewed the results of recent studies on the impact of coffee and caffeine on heart health. According to the analyzed data, consumption of 3 to 5 cups of black coffee, about 240 ml each, without sugar, sweeteners, syrups, creamers or other additional ingredients, is considered safe for most adults. Consuming unsweetened coffee is associated with a lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes, coronary arteries, stroke, heart failure and some heart rhythm disorders. Clinical studies have also shown that coffee consumption may be associated with a lower risk of atrial fibrillation. On the other hand, an increase in premature contractions of the ventricles, known as PVCs, has also been observed. Experts point out that the reaction to caffeine varies from one person to another. Some people develop tolerance to higher amounts of caffeine, while others may experience strong effects even after consuming small amounts. In the short term, caffeine can cause temporary increases in blood pressure, heart rate, blood sugar levels, and alertness. Some people may also experience fast or irregular heartbeats, as well as sleep problems. According to experts, the risk may be greater when caffeine is taken in high amounts, especially through energy drinks. Consuming large amounts of caffeine in these products can have negative effects on the cardiovascular system, increasing the risk of high blood pressure and heart rhythm disorders. The authors of the scientific statement note that it is difficult to determine whether the positive effects observed in some studies come from directly from caffeine. The reason is that in most studies, the main source of caffeine is coffee, which also contains many other ingredients. Some of these substances have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and may be responsible for part of the beneficial effects associated with coffee consumption, Oranews writes, KosovaPress reports. So, for most healthy adults, a moderate consumption of coffee black seems to be part of a healthy lifestyle. However, the optimal amount of caffeine depends on the individual and how the body reacts to it.
