Two days of paid leave every month for women with diagnosed gynecological diseases that cause painful menstruation.

Montenegro thus becomes the only country in the Balkans to adopt legal changes of this nature, in an attempt to harmonize women’s health with work.

Interventions were made in the Law on Health Insurance.

This right applies to women who have painful menstrual cycles caused by the diagnosis as endometriosis, fibroids, polyps and other gynecological diseases.

The initiative for changes to the law was presented in March of this year, on the eve of International Women’s Day, by the independent MP Jevrosima Pejović.

The draft law was previously unanimously supported in the meetings of the Health, Labor and Social Welfare Committee and the Legislative Committee.

Beyond the holidays, the legal changes also aim to fight based discrimination against women.

The only European country that has already introduced menstrual leave is Spain.

While Europe is still debating, absence for menstrual reasons has been a practice in some East Asian countries for decades.
