The North Atlantic Council gathered today in the format of KFOR, together with troop-contributing partners, to discuss with KFOR Commander, Major General Ozkan Ulutas. During the meeting, Ulutas presented an update on KFOR's ongoing commitment to maintaining a safe environment for all citizens in Kosovo and guaranteeing freedom of movement. According to NATO, the mission continues to operate in accordance with Resolution 1244 of the UN Security Council and in close coordination with the Kosovo Police and the EU Mission for the Rule of Law in Kosovo, EULEX. The focus of the discussions was also the process of optimizing the presence of KFOR. NATO emphasizes that this process is being implemented gradually and is based on the developments of the security situation in Kosovo. In the event of a worsening of the situation, the process can be reversed. The Alliance has announced that KFOR will continue to be equipped, trained and organized to fulfill its mandate, maintaining the necessary skills and readiness to face different security scenarios. NATO has designated the Western Balkans as a region of strategic importance and has reiterated its commitment to sustainable security in Kosovo and regional stability. The Alliance has also expressed its support for the Facilitated Dialogue from the European Union between Kosovo and Serbia, considering it as a framework for resolving unresolved issues and respecting the rights of all communities. Major General Ozkan Ulutas is expected to complete his second term as KFOR commander in mid-October. He will be succeeded by Major General Roberto Vergori of Italy.
