Spanish government officials confirmed that Spain has blocked the US from using its airspace for war-related flights involving Iran, reports Anadolu.
The restrictions also apply to US aircraft stationed in third countries such as the United Kingdom and France, Spanish military sources told the newspaper “El Pais”.
Washington had also considered deploying strategic bombers such as B-52 and B-1 aircraft in bases in the south of Spain, but the proposal was withdrawn after Madrid made it clear that it would not support operations without international legal support, “El Pais” added.
Defense Minister Margarita Robles reiterated the government’s position today.
“Everyone knows Spain’s position. The use of the bases is not authorized and certainly the use of Spanish airspace is not authorized for actions related to the war in Iran,” she said. journalists.
Spain has made a limited exception for emergency situations, allowing planes to transit or land if necessary, El Pais reported.
Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares said the decision is in line with the government’s stance not to “do anything” that could escalate tensions in the Middle East.
He told broadcaster RAC1 that he is now “more worried” than a month ago about the situation, warning that it represents a “very serious” military scenario.
“At any moment, we could see an exodus of immigrants from Iran to Europe,” he said.
Albares added that the government fears the conflict is moving towards a “permanent war” scenario.
