Spain has “urgently” summoned Israel’s charge d’affaires in Madrid to express its “strongest condemnation” for the detention of activists from the Sumud global humanitarian aid flotilla, which included Spanish citizens, reports Anadolu.
As EFE reports, sources from Spain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that embassies and consulates in Israel and the region, along with the consular emergency unit, are “fully operational and in contact with the organizers of the flotilla”.
According to Israeli authorities, 175 activists of various nationalities were stopped at sea near the Greek coast while en route to Gaza, according to sources in the aid flotilla, including about 30 Spanish nationals.
The sources added that about 20 of these Spanish nationals reside in Catalonia.
Spanish authorities said the minister of Foreign Affairs Minister Jose Manuel Albares is also in contact with counterparts from other countries whose nationals were among those arrested. One of the crew members, Catalan firefighter Pau Perez, who was not arrested, said on social media that they had spent the night trying to evade the Israeli ships. calling for protests to demand their release.
The flotilla, consisting of 58 ships carrying activists from different countries, left Barcelona on April 15, with the aim of breaking the blockade of Gaza and distributing humanitarian aid.
