The US-Iran talks are cancelled

Saturday, June 20th 2026

Talks scheduled to take place Friday between the United States and Iran on the implementation of the 14-point agreement that ended the war between them have been canceled, Switzerland’s foreign ministry announced.

Talks were expected to begin in the small Swiss village of Obbürgen, two days after the signing of the memorandum of understanding (MOU), which opened a 60-day period to negotiate a deal. permanent standoff over Iran’s nuclear program, while also aiming to restore normal oil flow through the Strait of Hormuz.

The White House has said the US looks forward to “beginning technical talks as soon as possible,” but also announced that JD Vance, who is leading negotiations for the Trump administration, will no longer travel to Switzerland.

A White House spokesman said late Thursday that “The logistics of these negotiations have never been simple or predictable. So far, the vice president is not leaving tonight.”

The cancellation of the talks came so suddenly that Vance’s staff and a small group of reporters had already gathered at Joint Base Andrews, near Washington, in anticipation of the trip. Dozens of White House officials, preparatory staff members and media representatives were already in Switzerland to prepare for Vance’s expected arrival./Koha/
