Intuition has become fashionable. Listen to any podcast or open any self-help book and you’ll find the same advice: trust your gut, listen to your body, follow your heart.
The problem is that intuition doesn’t come labeled. Nowhere is it written where it came from. Sometimes behind it are years of experience. Sometimes it’s just a well-disguised bias. And sometimes it’s just fear.
Science shows something much more concrete than we usually imagine. Much of what we call intuition is learned knowledge that surfaces before words can: our brains recognize a familiar pattern without us even realizing it—and so quickly that the answer arrives before we know how to explain it.
Intuition, then, is a mental process. In some circumstances it works great, in others it fails miserably. All skill lies in the difference between them.
Usually we take the strength of a feeling as a measure of its importance. And often this holds: a stabbing pain indicates more severe wounds than a dull pain; a deep sadness indicates greater loss than a mild disappointment. Intuitively, this logic does not apply. A hunch can be very strong and at the same time completely wrong.
The difference lies in the fact that intuition is learned. Not through books, but through repetition. Researchers call it implicit learning: when the brain encounters something often enough, it begins to record the repeated patterns and reuse them — even though we can’t put them into words.
This is how it realizes that a sentence “sounds wrong,” without knowing which rule it’s breaking. Or so you feel the conversation straining, a moment before you can tell exactly what changed.
This kind of learning goes primarily through the basal ganglia — the same brain structures that inculcate through repetition habits like driving or reading. It does not pass through the systems that store facts that we can recall at will. Therefore, the result comes to us as a feeling, not as an explanation.
Herein lies the danger: implicit learning has no quality control. The brain registers everything it encounters often enough—correctly or incorrectly, it doesn’t matter. So the fact that an intuition feels strong does not at all prove that it is right.
In one experiment, participants were asked to judge the direction of moving dots. Meanwhile, emotional images were surreptitiously appearing before their eyes, so quickly that they did not notice them at all. When those invisible images consistently guided him to the correct answer, participants’ accuracy and confidence increased significantly. When the images were completely random, nothing changed. Conclusion: intuition is only valid when there is a reliable model behind it.
The same is true of professionals under pressure. A well-known 1980s study of fire chiefs found that they rarely stopped to compare alternatives. They immediately recognize the situation as similar to something in the past, match it with a solution that has worked in the past, do a quick mental check, and act. Researchers call this “cognition-driven decision making”.
But such intuition arises only where the answer comes quickly and clearly. The firefighter finds out within a few minutes if his decision was right. A television analyst, an investor or a hiring manager may wait years — or never find out. Therefore, they find it much more difficult to gauge their own confidence.
If you are not a firefighter, then how can you best use your intuition?
Instead of blindly following a hunch or dismissing it immediately, you can stop and measure how much weight it is worth giving it. Three questions are enough to turn a murky feeling into something you can appreciate:
Intuition should be just one voice in the decision-making process, not a substitute for curiosity and practical testing. Yes, it can give you a quick, accurate reading based on your experience — but it can also lie to you.
So the next time you have a hunch, don’t follow it blindly, but don’t dismiss it either. Treat it as information: where did it come from, did you really earn it, and how can you put it to the test. Because good intuition, after all, is nothing more than the ability to recognize patterns. All the skill lies in the difference between a reliable model and a mere strong feeling. There’s nothing magical here — just practice.
